Wellness After 40

How Much Protein You Actually Need After 40

Most people over 40 are getting about half what they need — and getting nearly none of it at breakfast. Here is how to work out your own number.

  1. Start with your body weightA reasonable working target for most adults over 40 is 0.6 to 0.8 grams per pound of body weight. For a 160lb adult that is roughly 96 to 128 grams a day.
  2. Divide it across meals, not into dinnerSpreading protein across three meals does more than the same total loaded into the evening. Aim for 25 to 35 grams per meal rather than 10 at breakfast and 60 at dinner.
  3. Breakfast is where almost everyone falls shortToast, cereal, fruit and coffee is a carbohydrate-only start. Two eggs is about 12 grams — a reasonable beginning, not a finished breakfast.

The age-banded calculator, a printable daily tracker, a quick-reference chart of protein content in common foods, and 30 meals at 25 to 35 grams each are in the free tracker.

Why the requirement rises with age

The body becomes less efficient at converting dietary protein into muscle as we age — researchers call this anabolic resistance. Practically, it means the intake that was adequate at thirty is not adequate at fifty-five.

Muscle is also where most glucose gets used. Maintaining it is one of the more useful things you can do for steady energy, and protein is the input that makes maintenance possible.

Track one day, not thirty

You do not need to log food forever. Track a single ordinary day, honestly, and compare it to your target.

Most people find the gap sits almost entirely at breakfast and lunch. Once you see it, you rarely need to track again — you simply adjust those two meals and the total takes care of itself.
