What Your Blood Sugar Numbers Actually Mean

Three numbers get quoted at appointments and rarely explained. Here is what each one is measuring, in plain language.

  1. Fasting glucoseA single snapshot taken after roughly eight hours without food. It tells you what your body settles at overnight — useful, but one reading on one morning.
  2. HbA1cAn average across about three months, because it measures glucose bound to red blood cells. Far harder to skew with one careful week before the appointment.
  3. Post-meal (2-hour)Taken two hours after eating. This is often where change appears first, and it is the number most people never have measured.

A full reference table of what each range means, the questions worth asking at your appointment, and a 12-month tracker to spot your own trend are in the free prep kit.

One reading is not a trend

A single result on a single morning can be moved by a poor night's sleep, an infection, stress, or what you ate two days earlier. It is a data point, not a verdict.

What is genuinely informative is the direction of travel across several readings over months. That is why tracking your own numbers over a year tells you more than any one appointment can.

Go in prepared

Appointments are short. People who arrive with their previous numbers written down, and two or three specific questions, tend to leave with far more useful information.

Only your doctor can interpret your results in the context of your history and medication. What this page can do is help you understand the vocabulary before you walk in, so the conversation starts further along.
